The 2017 SA Senior Masters has just concluded at the Silver Lakes Golf Estate, Pretoria East. Sincere thanks go to the Tournament Ambassador, Jannie Ackerman, who has once again brought this prestigious tournament to the SA Senior Tour.
The prize fund was increased to R400,000 & was competed by a star studded field of Senior Professionals (see list below). This was the first time the event was staged at Sliver Lakes & it proved to be a great test of golf.
The first two days took the form of Pro-Am’s where 25 teams of three Amateurs combine with a Senior Professional in an Alliance format (afternoon field). A prize giving dinner took place at the end of each Pro-Am day & an overall team prize for the best two day combined score.
Congratulations to team Sudor Coal who took the overall team prize on 183 points.
The Senior Professionals, not playing in the daily Pro-Am’s played in the morning field each day. Following the second round there was a cut for all the professionals to the top 45 & ties.
These top 48 professionals who made the cut, contested the final round for the prize fund.
Round 1 started with a bang with Neil Cheetham making the golf course look easy, by scoring a really low 60 (-12) to be ahead by 8 strokes. The 2nd round was a little tougher than the first and the scores showed it. Overnight leader, Neil Cheetham could only manage a 73 to still hold onto the lead by 5 strokes from Kevin Stone. Two strokes further back was Chris Williams, followed by James Kingston & Chris Davison.
Round 3 saw leader Neil Cheetham making 76 to finish in 3rd spot on -7. In second place was James Kingston on -9 & the winner, Kevin Stone who played superb golf with rounds of 68,70 & 68 to finish on -10.
